Background to the Study

Sexual assault is becoming prevalent among students across different colleges (Markson, 2019). Studies have also attempted to unveil various risk factors for sexual assault. According to Jordan (2021), sexual assault is an act of making sexual advances on a person without the consent of the person. Sexual assaults can amount to sexual violence such as rape. Sexual assault can be verbal or acted by the actor. Across different studies, women are the main victims of sexual assaults, which doesn’t imply that some men are not violated sexually. Among the risk factors for sexual assault, alcohol consumption has been repeatedly studied. It has been identified as one of the major causes of sexual assaults, especially among young adults.

The overarching aim of the research is to investigate the research question, of whether there is a relationship between alcohol and sexual assault among university students. The most effective method to find answers would be both quantitative and qualitative data methods. Research and literature based on comparable topics such as alcohol's effects on sexual behavior imply that qualitative methods fit the most. Data from journals and literature as well as statistics were used. Primary data from this research was used from studies of sexual assault and alcohol use and alcohol-related sexual assaults. Human participants were used only to answer an anonymous questionnaire. Though this study will concentrate on sexual assaults and alcohol at university, Jenkins, and Schuller (2007) reported sexual assault cases should be treated with vigilance and may not be reliable as not all sex crimes are reported.

Data was found by relevant theories and questionnaires, which will involve scenarios around sexual assault and the influence of alcohol and resource data. Applicants were asked how much they agree with the scenario given by agreeing or disagreeing with a few questions. The questionnaires were allocated online and given to students at the university as this was easier to gather data and allow responses to be easily collated before analysis.

This research can help make future changes in the hope to decrease alcohol-related sexual assaults. Regardless of this research covering alcohol-related sexual assaults, the optimism is that it may encourage further research in similar areas, which could help people build bases and finally act. A literature search was conducted using a mixture of keywords including sexual assault, university, alcohol, and students. The literature review studied research articles that recounted original data. Additionally, the literature review had to concentrate on any programs that were effective in reducing sexual violence that occurred in university. The literature review, in addition, had to suggest recommendations for creating effective prevention programs. Only literature reviews that originated in the United Kingdom and the USA were included. For any articles used, information was taken, including the title, authors, and year of publication.

This study does not in any way suggest that women are the cause of sexual assaults against them. In other words, what this study will establish does not in any way imply that women are responsible for sexual assaults perpetrated against them. On the contrary, the goal of the research is to understand sexual assault from the victim’s perspective so that women can be empowered to make informed decisions about alcohol use that may lower their risk to be sexually assaulted. To that extent, the research sets to give a general overview of the concept of alcohol use and consumption in the United Kingdom in general and at Sheffield University in particular. The study also seeks to define and discuss major types of alcohol effects, to decide the dimension of consumption that could amount to risk to women. The study will also provide information about the connection between alcohol consumption and sexual victimization, and discuss the relationship between alcohol consumption and sexual assault outcomes.

Aims of the Study

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between alcohol and sexual assault among university students.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:

  • To gather enough data to determine whether alcohol and sexual assault are linked
  • How significantly does alcohol plays a role with university students and being victims of sexual assault
  • To determine if anything can be done to prevent further alcohol-related sexual assaults in future
